Optimizing a fin ray for stiffness
نویسندگان
چکیده
We optimize the elastic constants of the supporting structure in flexible fish fins—the fin ray—to obtain the least deflection under loading. We first solve the problem numerically for rays with shear layers of uniform thickness. The optimal distributions of bending and shear moduli are nonzero on disjoint regions. The numerical solution suggests the form of the analytical solution, which we obtain using calculus of variations on two intervals with continuity conditions at the interface. The deflection of the optimal ray is less than half that of the uniform ray. When the shear layer thickness is allowed to vary, we find a tapered thickness distribution which gives zero deflection for a given positive loading. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Functional morphology of the fin rays of teleost fishes.
Ray-finned fishes are notable for having flexible fins that allow for the control of fluid forces. A number of studies have addressed the muscular control, kinematics, and hydrodynamics of flexible fins, but little work has investigated just how flexible ray-finned fish fin rays are, and how flexibility affects their response to environmental perturbations. Analysis of pectoral fin rays of blue...
متن کاملA robotic fish caudal fin: effects of stiffness and motor program on locomotor performance.
We designed a robotic fish caudal fin with six individually moveable fin rays based on the tail of the bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus. Previous fish robotic tail designs have loosely resembled the caudal fin of fishes, but have not incorporated key biomechanical components such as fin rays that can be controlled to generate complex tail conformations and motion programs similar to those ...
متن کاملBioinspiration from fish for smart material design and function
Fish are a potentially rich source of inspiration for the design of smart materials. Fish exemplify the use of flexible materials to generate forces during locomotion, and a hallmark of fish functional design is the use of body and fin deformation to power propulsion and maneuvering. As a result of nearly 500 million years of evolutionary experimentation, fish design has a number of interesting...
متن کاملThe effect of fin ray flexural rigidity on the propulsive forces generated by a biorobotic fish pectoral fin.
A biorobotic pectoral fin was developed and used to study how the flexural rigidities of fin rays within a highly deformable fish fin affect the fin's propulsive forces. The design of the biorobotic fin was based on a detailed analysis of the pectoral fin of the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). The biorobotic fin was made to execute the kinematics used by the biological fin during steady...
متن کاملThe mechanics of active fin-shape control in ray-finned fishes.
We study the mechanical properties of fin rays, which are a fundamental component of fish fin structure. We derive a linear elasticity model that predicts the shape of fin rays, given the input muscle actuation and external loading. We then test the model using experiments that measure (i) the ray deflection for a given actuation at the muscular interface, and (ii) the force-displacement respon...
